Early Education in
America was very primitive and often only the basics were taught:
the "3 R's" (reading, writing and arithmetic). Some
children learned their lessons at home while others, who were
more fortunate, went to one-room schools. Many one-room schools
were built during the 19th century to accommodate the growing
number of children in an area.
Early learning materials varied and included items such as
a hornbook, slate, and slate pencil or piece of chalk. Later,
school supplies included a pencil, pencil box, paper, ruler,
copybooks, quill pens, ink, and inkwell.
