On July 4, 1776, 250 years ago, the Second Continental Congress of the original 13 American colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, an official statement of freedom from British rule. Tensions and rebellion had been mounting over the previous decade. The colonists had been angry due to increased taxation without government representation, and wanted a constitutional government that ensured and protected the enlightened ideals of individual liberty, religious freedom, and the separation of church and state.
As the American colonists grumbled, the British monarchy established a stricter and stronger military presence within the territories. Communications eventually reached an impasse and American leaders, having popular support, began inciting action. Gunfire had actually begun a year earlier in 1775 when the American colonial militia and British military exchanged shots during the battles of Lexington and Concord.
From 1775-1783 the unified original 13 American colonies fought bravely to win the freedom and independence to live by their own governance according to their own values. The principles they fought to uphold and preserve continue to protect us today offering hope and sound vision to guide us into a bright future.
These cross-stitch kits are being offered as a tribute to the American Semiquincentennial, a celebration of 250 years of freedom which was established when The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776. Let us not forget the hard battles fought and never take our freedom for granted.
